Academy of Classical Karate has been offering instruction and training in Wado Karate since 1988. Located in Plano, TX, The Academy of Classical Karate has produced champions in life as well as in the martial arts.

Our Instructors have spent many years devoted to training in the art of Wado Karate and have attained a certain level of expertise to qualify them as teachers and also mentors.

Through extensive testing, certification and tournament level competition, our staff has attained a level of expertise in Wado Karate and now enjoy sharing their skill and passing it on to their students, while they continue to further their own skills.

Headed by Brody Burns (Sensei) and a staff of expert instructors and managers, including Darrin Free, Dale Gatchalian, Lisa Free, Vincent Garcia, Matthew Matson, Mike Gray, Bryan Nixon, Tom Scott, June Acheson, Rusty Acheson, and Maxine Lisot, The Academy of Classical Karate offers a number of programs for physical fitness and instruction in Karate, Aikido and Judo.

Sensei Brody Burns

Sensei Brody Burns

Sensei Burns started training in August of 1990 at the age of 18 while attending classes at Collin County Community College. He studied under Sensei Diana Worthen in Wado ryu karate at Worthen Karate Academy where he trained heavily while completing his college degree. In 1995, Sensei Burns graduated from college and returned to his hometown of Plano, where he continued to train under Sensei Worthen.

Sensei Gatchalian began training in karate on February 3, 1992 at the age of 12. He trained at Worthen Karate Academy under Sensei Diana Worthen in Wado Shinzen-Kai Karate-do. In January of 1996, Sensei Gatchalian began studying under Sensei Worthen's two senior students Sensei Darrin Free and Sensei Brody Burns at the same dojo, currently named the Academy of Classical Karate-do after she retired from teaching karate.

Senpai Tom Scott

Senpai Scott was born in Richardson, Texas on January 9th, 1990. His parents Mark and Mary started Tom in Karate when he was 8 years old at the Academy of Classical Karate. Tom chose karate over his other activities as his instructors became his friends and heroes.  From the beginning Tom’s chief instructor Brody Burns not only took the necessary time, but had the patience it takes to develop the world class athlete Tom is today.

Sensei Bill Stynetski

William started his first self-defense classes at the YMCA in Buffalo, N.Y. at the age of 6 years old. His family relocated eventually moving to Plano, TX. William wrestled for 4 years at Clark H.S. and Plano East Senior High School, and during that time also met Michael Park, Sensei and trained in Kuk Sul Won (and eventually in jujitsu and kajukembo).

Nidan Maxine Lisot

Nidan Maxine Lisot

Nidan Maxine Lisot began training in karate at thirteen years old at the Academy of Classical Karate in June 2001. She had prior exposure to dance and theater, but ultimately gave up those passions to pursue her training under the guidance of Brody Burns, Darrin Free, and Dale Gatchalian. In December 2008, she was promoted to black belt after passing examination by a WIKF panel that included Tatsuo Suzuki Sensei, then earned her second degree black belt in 2014. She now assists the adult program at the Academy of Classical Karate, leads the kids sparring class, and helps instruct karate kids on a regular basis.

Sensei Darrin Free

Sensei Darrin Free

Sensei Free started his karate training in August of 1989 at the age of 19 while attending classes at Collin County Community College. He studied under Sensei Diana Worthen in Wado Shinzen Kai Karate. Sensei Free joined Sensei Worthen’s karate academy and was extremely active, often training 6 six days a week. In the spring of 1994 Sensei Free earned his Black Belt in Wado Shinzen Kai.

 

Sensei Vincent Garcia

Sensei Vincent Garcia

Sensei Garcia began training in karate on October 21, 1991 at the age 11. He trained at Worthen Karate Academy under Sensei Diana Worthen in Wado Shinzen-Kai Karate. In 1996, Sensei Diana Worthen retired and passed her school down to her two senior students, Darrin Free and Brody Burns. In 1998, Sensei Garcia earned his black belt along with Senpai Free, under Tom Seargent, the head instructor of the Wado-Shinzen Kai.

Senpai Matthew Matson

Senpai Matthew Matson began training in karate in January of 1999 while taking classes at Collin County Community College. In 2004 he got a chance to train with Sensei Doug Jepperson, another WIKF Instructor in Utah for 6 months. Back in Texas in 2005 Matthew helped the WIKF USA team stay motivated and training hard for the WIKF World championships that year, where he competed in Kata, Kumite, and team Kumite.

Nidan Travis Hintzel

Nidan Hintzel began training in February of 1993 at the age of 4, studying Matsubayashi-ryu in Mason, Ohio. Travis’s parents enrolled him in karate to help with his discipline and focus in school. At the age of 17, he became the youngest student to obtain his black belt at his dojo. His educational studies led him to Dallas, Texas where he also began studying Wado-ryu at the Academy of Classical Karate; earning his black belt in 2013.

Shodan Cesar Colunga

Shodan Cesar Colunga

Shodan Colunga began his training on June 25th, 2007 at the age of 9 at the Academy of Classical Karate. He started training in the Kids Program under Sensei Garcia and Chief Instructor Sensei Brody Burns. He later joined the competition team (WIKF TEXAS) in January of 2008, where he quickly fell in love with the sport of Karate. Shodan Colunga obtained his black belt on December 12th, 2015 under WIKF Chief Instructor Sensei Jon Wicks. Through the years of training he has had the opportunity to be taught by Sensei Tatsuo Suzuki & Sensei Jon Wicks, both being the most Senior Instructors of Wado Kokusai Karate-Do Renmei. Through his competitive career Shodan Colunga has had the opportunity to visit many countries for major tournaments all over the world being a member of the United Stated National Karate Team.
